Importance of SEL

According to Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the integration of SEL that address core competencies in Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making are critical to student success and have the following advantages:

Current Trends in Children's Mental Health

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and​ the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM):

  • 1 in 6 children aged 2-8 years (17.4%) have a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder

  • Among children living below the Federal Poverty Level, more than 1 in 5 (22%) have a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder

  • The pandemic has created a perfect storm of stressors for children

  • Mental health related visits to healthcare professionals have increased significantly since the start of the pandemic

    • Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs), including the understanding that our thoughts are powerful, automatic, and how to combat them when they lie to us

    • Kindness as the precursor to empathy, including the recognition that we each have strengths and struggles, and that we work best when we combine all of our strengths together as a team

    • Supercharging the Brain, including a review of all lessons and units to remind students how to love their brain, be mindful, be kind, and correct automatic negative thoughts
